Eligibility Criteria for Candidates to Apply for an EGS Fellowship or Observership

1. Requirements for candidates to be eligible for EGS fellowship

1.1. Mandatory
  • A completed Ophthalmology residency program
  • A recognised diploma in Ophthalmology
  • A title of ‘specialist’ in their own country
  • Eligibility to register with the national medical board of the host institution
  • Fluent in English.
  • For candidates applying to the “Clinical fellowship” a minimum of 80 cataract surgeries performed prior to application is required
1.2. Recommended
  • EBO (European Board of Ophthalmology) or ICO (International Council of Ophthalmology) diploma
  • Knowledge of the local language

2. Requirements for candidates to be eligible for EGS observership

2.1. Mandatory
  • A completed or current (in the final year) Ophthalmology residency program
  • Recognised or working towards a diploma in Ophthalmology
  • A particular interest in glaucoma
  • Fluent in English

3. Funding

3.1. Candidates who work and reside in countries of the European geographical boundaries
  • Candidates who fulfil the requirements as stated in 1.1. , 1.2. , 2.1. can apply to the EGS Foundation for full or partial funding of the fellowship or the observership
3.2. Candidates who reside outside the European geographical boundaries
  • Candidates who fulfil the mandatory requirements as stated in 1.1 and 1.2 are eligible but have to provide their own funding

4. Applications process

Applications can be sent to several institutions at the same time
4.1. Fellowship
  • Completed EGS application form (EGS Fellowship Application Form)
  • Fulfilled requirements as stated in 1
  • Updated CV
  • Letter of motivation
  • Letter of recommendation from the candidate’s hospital/institution/head of department
  • For the “Clinical fellowship with surgical training”: logbook with numbers and types of surgeries performed prior to the fellowship
  • Interview with the host institution
  • Letter of acceptance of the host institution/training centre
4.2. Observership
  • Completed EGS applications form (EGS Observership Application Form)
  • Fulfilled requirements as stated in 2
  • Updated CV
  • Letter of motivation
  • Letter of recommendation (Ophthalmology department, University)
