1. Teaching centres
1.1. Mandatory requirements
- Academic teaching and training centre or affiliated centre with recognised national capacity for teaching and training in the field of glaucoma
- Adequate number of glaucoma patients (approximately 50 per week) to allow teaching and training of the fellow as required in the EGS fellowship syllabus
- Equipment fulfilling the needs of the EGS glaucoma syllabus for diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of patients with glaucoma (EGS fellowship syllabus)
- Surgical equipment fulfilling the needs of the EGS glaucoma syllabus cataract and glaucoma surgery (EGS fellowship syllabus)
- A full-time presence or shared part-time presence of a glaucoma supervisor ensuring a daily supervision of the trainee
- Medical and paramedical staff trained in the field of glaucoma
- Administrative staff able to assist the trainee in all administrative tasks
- Medical library or electronical free access to ophthalmological literature and literature focused on glaucoma
- Exposure to internal and external teaching sessions, meetings, congresses
- Medical protection (insurance cover) for any clinical activity (medical and surgical)
1.2. Recommended requirements
- Wet lab facilities or surgical simulator for surgical training
- For the clinical fellowship (as defined by the EGS fellowship definition paper) there should be an opportunity to allow supervised clinical research that would take no more than 20% of the fellow’s clinical activity time
- For the research fellowship (as defined by the EGS fellowship definition paper) there should be an opportunity to allow supervised clinical activity of no more than 20% of the fellow’s research activity.
2. Fellowship program director (s) / supervisor (s)
2.1. Mandatory requirements
- Full time or shared part time presence of fellowship program director (s)/ supervisor (s)
- Nationally and internationally acknowledged specialist (s) in the field of glaucoma
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in glaucoma management since his/her glaucoma fellowship or an equivalent subspecialty training in the field of glaucoma
- Activity in clinical and/or basic research
- Experience and dedication to teaching
- Active daily supervision of the fellow by one or several glaucoma specialists /trainers
- Active support in clinical or basic research projects
- Attendance of the fellow at departmental scheduled programs, such as ward rounds, teaching sessions, journal club
- Evaluation of the fellow (EGS evaluation grid and logbook) every three months during an appraisal meeting which includes written feedback
- At the end of the training period the trainer provides a final evaluation as well as a recommendation letter
3. Evaluation of the candidate

3.2. Evaluation by the trainer
- An evaluation is conducted by the trainer every three months during an open discussion with the fellow. The conclusions of this appraisal are documented in the logbook, signed and dated by both trainer and fellow
- At the end of the fellowship, the fellow as well as the trainer independently fill in the EGS evaluation grid and logbook (EGS evaluation grid and logbook)
- In case of an insufficient and unsatisfactory evaluation outcome, the program director has to advise the fellow without delay
- At the end of the training period the trainer provides a final evaluation (EGS evaluation grid and logbook) as well as a recommendation letter
- There is no formal examination at the end of the fellowship
